Backstreaming Pickup Ions

چکیده
Abstract Ions that are reflected at the shock front and escape back into upstream region can play role of ions start to be accelerated by a diffusive acceleration mechanism. Backstreaming have been shown generated from superthermal tail solar wind sufficiently high temperatures. The number such was found low they were not angles exceeding 50°. mechanism production is multiple reflection when an ion changes direction motion inside ramp for first time, due cross-shock potential. Since pickup (PUIs) constitute strongly population protons substantially stronger backstreaming PUIs expected. We study in planar stationary using test particle analysis. used model inspired observed profile termination shock. influence magnetic compression, angle, overshoot analyzed. It generation this more efficient than thermal wind. fraction rapidly increases with increase compression decrease angle. Overshoot enhances allows it larger angles. No 60°. results analysis supported full-particle simulations.

A Discussion on Interstellar Pickup Ions
Although there is a lot known about the physics that dictates the movement of the planets and starts throughout the night sky, little is known about the medium which encompasses these heavenly bodies. Let us consider our own solar system as an example of this. The reason for the orbit of planets around the Sun has been well known for quite some time. In addition to this, the predictability of t...
متن کاملMAVEN insights into oxygen pickup ions at Mars
Since Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN)’s arrival at Mars on 21 September 2014, the SEP (Solar Energetic Particle) instrument on board the MAVEN spacecraft has been detecting oxygen pickup ions with energies of a few tens of keV up to ~200 keV. These ions are created in the distant upstream part of the hot atomic oxygen exosphere of Mars, via photoionization, charge exchange with s...
متن کاملObservations of interstellar helium pickup ions in the inner heliosphere
[1] During the MESSENGER spacecraft’s interplanetary trajectory to Mercury, the Fast Imaging Plasma Spectrometer (FIPS) measured the first helium pickup ion distributions at a heliocentric distance (R) ranging between 0.3 and 0.7 AU. From several transits of MESSENGER through the interstellar helium gravitational focusing cone, we map the cone structure in the ecliptic at R = 0.3 AU and compare...
متن کاملStatistical acceleration of interstellar pickup ions in corotating interaction regions
Observations from the SWICS instrument on Ulysses reveal that there is little evidence for the acceleration of interstellar pick-up ions at the forward and reverse shocks which surround Co-rotating Interactions Regions (CIR's) in the solar wind. Rather, the pick-up ions exhibit strong acceleration in regions within the CIR where there are increased variations in the magnitude of the magnetic fi...
متن کاملEnergy deposition of pickup ions and heating of Titan’s atmosphere
The deposition of energy, escape of atomic and molecular nitrogen and heating of the upper atmosphere of Titan are studied using a Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method. It is found that the deflected magnetospheric atomic nitrogen ions and molecular pickup ions deposit more energy in Titan’s upper atmosphere than solar radiation. The energy deposition in this region determines the atmospheric l...
